All the animals were abused, mistreated, or unwanted, and come from private individuals, zoos, government confiscations, and other refuge facilities. The great majority of our animals have been born in captivity. Many where purposively breed to supply the exotic pet trade and to have tiny cute cubs for display in animal exhibits.
Regulations vary and in some areas it is legal for private individuals to own exotic felines (wild cats). T&D's is one example of the fact that exotic felines do NOT make good "pets". Most of the animals we care for have come from private owners who realized that their tiger, lion, cougar, etc. is NOT a pet. Zoos and refuge facilities usually can not take someone's pet for various reasons and many innocent animals are euthanized (killed) because of someone's greed, ignorance, etc...
T&D's does not breed or sell/trade/give away any of exotic felines. There are too many animalsthat need homes already. We will not add to the problem. Once the animal comes to T&D's it has a home for life.
We hate to see exotic/wild animals in cages. We wish that they could be released into the wild. However, these animals were born in captivity and do not have the practice of survival like wild born animals. They would not survive in the wild. Releasing them would be certain death. Education makes a huge difference for their survival and to deter people from owning these animals as "pets". Talking does not deter people from owning one of these animals as a pet. They need to see what is involved in their care... strong fencing, high food consumption, specialize handling, etc... Seeing a 400-500 pound tiger just a few feet away gives people a good slice of hard reality making them think twice about buying one. T&D's is open to the public for only a short time each year. The animals need time to heal and rest.
With cats being carnivores a meat diet is needed. It is specially prepared to ensure proper nutrition. They are NOT fed live prey. Click here to learn more.
T&D's can not afford any paid employees, but you are welcome to volunteer to help the animals (*due to state laws and our policy, we do not allow volunteers to touch any of the carnivores) Volunteers help with pen construction, getting areas ready for new exhibits, maintenance, food preparation, etc... T&D's is NOT funded by the government or any business. T&D's does not have any paid employees. The owners have outside incomes that support themselves and the animals. Currently, we do NOT even average a $200.00 a month from donations! When a donation is made, it goes directly to the animals.
100% of every dollar of your donation to T&D's goes straight to help the animals! Donations are always needed! We have fund raising programs like the Sponsor -An-Animal and the Adopt-A-Pole Program. You can also check out our Wish List for other items needed. You may also volunteer to HELP the animals (*due to state laws and our policy, we do not allow volunteers to touch any of the carnivores) Volunteers help with pen construction, getting areas ready for new exhibits, maintenance, food preparation, etc...
